Washday wins Best Short Film @ NZIFF

Drumroll please!

We are delighted to announce that Washday has been awarded the Vista Group Award for Best Short Film at NZIFF 2021. Of 117 films submitted to the 2021 NZIFF Best Shorts competition, Washday made it to the top 6 and Premiered at the Embassy Theatre in Wellington on the 10th November. It was such a coup to see this film up on the big screen next to 5 extraordinary short films.


The awards were judged by a three-member jury: filmmakers Annie Collins and Gaysorn Thavat, and Matthew Liebmann of Vista Group.

The Vista Group Award for Best Short Film was jointly awarded to Washday by Kath Akuhata-Brown and When We Were Kids by Josephine Stewart-Te Whiu. “Both directors work equally demonstrated the best craft, the most fully realised storytelling and were both very accomplished works of art.”

The Auckland Live Spirit of The Civic Award was awarded to Josephine Stewart-Te Whiu .
The Creative New Zealand Emerging Talent Award, was awarded to Awa Puna, the director of Tūī.
